In his book about the 1990s, Chuck Klosterman used Baudrillard’s take on the gulf war (and the larger concepts of simulacrum and hyper reality) to make the case that the TV like nature of the conflict made it fleeting in the minds of voters, who forgot it like they would a made for tv mini series. This insignificance, among an electorate that already had a short attention span, is what Klosterman argues cost Bush Sr. the 1992 election (as opposed to Perot, etc), as the incumbent was unable to get much benefit from his signature accomplishment.

Yes, we're in a different time, but Baudrillard was well into that wise-assery by the time of those essays. He's there by America.
